I know some larger dogs need to be fed twice a day. Some smaller dogs are able to only eat once.

Some Feeding Tips:
  • Feeding once-twice a day is good. As for the amount, monitor your dog's mass and activity and make adjustments to the amount and frequency of feeding. Obviously all dogs are different, because of size and breed. Much like humans, different dogs need a slightly different amount of food.
  • It is a good practice to feed your dog at the same time daily, so as to keep him/her on a predictable washroom schedule. Remember to clean your dog's dishes daily as well. Keep fresh, clean water in the bowl throughout the day and refill it before feeding time.
  • Some veterinarians and pet websites recommend starting off feeding your dog or puppy slightly LESS than what is recommended on the package. In a review of dog foods, it has been shown that most dogs are overfed based on the recommended package diet. (I'll track down this reference)
  • Feed your dog the same kind of food every day. If you plan on changing it, do it slowly over time to prevent upset stomach and diarrhea.
  • Gradually transition to new foods by mixing the old and new brands together, slowly replacing the old brand of food.
