Default Having a parrot as a pet

What are some of the things that you can teach a parrot to say? Are there some things that they just cannot say or can they say most everything they are taught?

Can you leave them out of a cage and if so, how often should you do this and for how long.

I inherited a parrot named Ron from a friend who died recently (parrots live over a hundred years old) so he was already trained. Ron can repeat practically anything I say as long as it is said slowly (exept for the really hard words) he says or rather repeats goodmorning and goodnight and he can also hum (I think^^) he lives out of the cage at all times because he just sits on his perch or flyes around the garden but... WARNING: parrots are extremely messy!!!!!!

I keep my parrot in a cage. I have been unable to train him as of yet. I have been working on teaching him hello and goodbye. I must be speaking too fast because I have tried for over a month. I will take the advice Althea is giving and see what happens. Hopefully I can get it done before the 15. Family is flying in and what better way to say hello than to have your bird do it for you.

My parrot used to repeat everything I said and repeated things the neighbor's said including some mature adult content which isn't suitable for kids. They are pretty neat but extremely messy creatures.

The thing that I do not like about parrots is that are very loud and I can't sleep at night with all the noise but a friend of mine has a Cockatiels which I really like but i don't think I can take care of one more pet .

The first words that you should teach to a parrot are short words like "hi", "hello". Then maybe after that, you can start teaching them two to three words.

My friend has a parrot who is very talkative. She swears she does not teach him words and says he just mimics her. Maybe she is right because one of the words is a swear word

My son and I were in a pet store, and this one parrot kept whistling at my son and saying hey baby. My son though it was funny, and thought that it said that to everyone who came in, but that was not the case. It did not say anything to me or the others that came in or anything. Then when my son left it said bye baby. It was funny and kept us smiling the rest of the day.

Most of the words my parrot can manage to speak but the best is when it wishes me good morning and won't stop doing so untill and unless I respond. You can teach them very easily as they are good and fast learners.
