I do not want to scare you. A lot of people have pet birds. There are diseases that can be transmitted between birds and humans. The kitchen counter??? Oh well, I suppose to each his own. Below is a link to one of the diseases. I can't even pronounce it, so I will not try.

At home if you are keeping birds as pets you got to keep them caged and preferably out side the house. There are cases where the owners were found suffering from deadly diseases after having birds as pets.

If one has pet birds at home, he should keep them away from the eatables. Keeping them on kitchen counter can be dangerous for the family's health. Psittacosis is the most common disease which is also called parrot fever.
