Default Owning a Rabbit?

So lately I've considered getting a rabbit for the kids. They find them incredibly cute (as do I!) but I'm concerned if they'll be a nuisance in any way.

Does anyone own a pet rabbit? If so, do you keep it in a cage or do you let it run around the backyard?

Thanks!

We used to own three rabbits (Mom, Dad, Baby) and we kept them in an insulated "cage" or home in the backyard. Depending on where you live you might not want to let them run around freely. They might get away (under the fence) or get attacked by another animal (specifically cats, they love to chase rabbits).

What about keeping a rabbit inside the house?

I don't own a pet rabbit, but I do know of many people who have. They are usually kept in cages indoors (probably due to the long Canadian winters we have). However, they were often brought out and ran happily around the living room. They can be litter trained, so as long as you have a litter box out for them while they are running around, you don't have to worry about finding little messes everywhere.
One of the most important things to consider before buying a pet is how it will fit into your lifestyle. Are you willing to spend the time to train and bond with your new pet? Will you be prepared to take care of the rabbit if the kids lose interest? Pets can be a wonderful experience, and help to teach responsibility to children, so I do encourage that if you are prepared to put the time and money in, you will be happy you did so.
Cheers,
Lindsey

Thanks for the tips!

I own a Fox Terrier/Jack Russel and she's enough trouble when she's inside. She'll do her business wherever she pleases - the only problem is that since she's a spoilt little one she'll bark her head off until she gets inside. Obviously I wouldn't want the rabbit mimicking the dog and "staining the carpet"!

I had a rabbit before and its not a nuisance. I just kept in a cage since we had dogs around. The only problem that I had was having to clean the cage often because of the smell from the urine.

Rabbits do tend to be high maintenance in the cleaning department.

Having a closed or walled backyard is very important if you plan on letting rabbits run around. They are pretty crafty and they'll try and get out. If your sister has a garden, fence it in...they'll eat everything

Be sure to have a shelter for them if they are to be kept outside. If it's cold, a shelter with insulation is important.

Be sure to handle rabbits correctly, as doing so incorrectly can actually hurt their backs.

I used to own a rabbit. It did become a hassle. Too much cleaning involved. Cleaning the cages are one tough task. If you do let it run around the back yard it will escape. I will never own another rabbit.
