Default Sick rabbit, lumps on face and neck, anyone...

...else ever have this problem? Did they go away? Since November my 5 year old female rabbit has had lumps near her mouth and now on the bottom side of her neck. The lumps are pink, hard, and filled with puss. I HAVE been to the vet several times, and she has been taking antibiotics. The vet is not sure so she just keeps draining them and giving her more medicine.I just want to know if anyone else has had a similar problem and what it was.

Honey, I suggest you go to another vet...for a second opinion too, if not better. Are they cysts or tumors? Are some of them hard? I'd keep an eye on her eating habits, whether she stops or loses appetite, etc. Good luck.

If the lumps are near the mouth and nose, it could be vents disease. Treatment:"The recommended treatment for Vent Disease is with Dura Pen (Bi Cillin or Pen BP-48) these are a combination of Procaine Penicillin G and Penicillin G Benzathine, stays in bloodstream longer than Procaine Pen G by itself."The vet can check for this infection specifically by -- "dark-field microscopy of scrapings of the lesions by a Vet."

I had the same problem with a male rabbit I had. He would get them on his back and neck. My stepdad said they were worbles??? or some kind of fly larva causing the problem. I would drain them and spray the area with some farm store disenfectant. The treated area would heal, but another would pop up. I never could cure them and he was the only rabbit who got them so I have to question the validity of my stepdad's suggestion. I would think maybe have a culture run on them and find out what kind of infection you dealing with ~ staph, strep, etc and that may give some clue as to what the cause might be. Watch for scratching, sharp objects, or anything else that may be opening the skin up to see if it is an internal or external cause.

Please get a second opinion from another vet. You know, it could be a dirty scent gland. Bunnies have 2 sets of scent glands; one underneath their chin and one by their genitals. They need to be cleaned! Otherwise, they can get red and infected. If not that, then your rabbit might have some other serious issue. Go to a new vet, maybe call around and find one that specializes in rabbits/small animals. Hope your bunny gets better soon!
