Default Feeding time

Well I need some help for my cats. I have noticed even if I feed my cats at a particular time that will not deter them from meowing when we take food. How to change this behaviour?

When there is a feeding bowl out at other times, do they overeat?

I found that my cats are pretty good at regulating their own food intake, unlike a dog which eats everything in front of him, so I leave a full bowl out all the time. The cats come and go and eat when they are hungry, and still maintain a healthy mass and activity.

I have to agree. I have never had a problem with my cats overeating and they do regulate their own eating times on their own.

If you are worried about your cat overeating, switch the food (gradually, of course), to a weight managment diet which has less calories per cup. This will help prevent gaining weight, although you may still need to restrict food if they the cat is completely overindulging.

Unfortenatly that doesn't always work...When I left my husband in charge of the cats for a fortnight while I was working abroad, I came back to find my cats had put on a lot of weight and needed urgently to go on a strict diet. A part from the fact that my husband is lazy he seemed to have had an idea that as usual would avoid him doing too much work: he installed automatic food filling bowls (a bit like bunnys have for their water) but the cats didn't control themselves and ate too much.

I guess it depends on your cat. My cats get a cup of food put out for them in the morning and then another cup before we go to bed. Of course, no amount of food will keep your pets from begging when you eat! LOL...my cats do it all the time. You just have to ignore them! Or give them some of what you're eating! Though we do feel up a feeder when we go out of town. My cats don't get fat because they don't gorge themselves. If you have a cat that can't seem to moderate their intake, this might not be possible though!

The other solution would be to make sure to put out their food at the same time you and your family sit down to eat!

You cats might have other things that they are wanting from you instead of food. Maybe they need water, or they want attention. You need to try different things, maybe they like what they see you eating.
