Default Puppy won't eat doggy food?

My 7-month-old Maltese puppy will not eat his doggy food. I know that it mostly my fault for cooking food for him. Now he will only eat the cooked food, not his puppy kibble and wet food. He is small and skinny so around dinnertime my husband and I give in cook something for him. How do get him to eat own his food again?I feed my puppy Boiled chicken, Grilled beef, fruits & veggie’s. He never eats table scarps, and all the food I cook for my baby is all Vet-approved so accusing me killing my puppy with human food will only make you look bad, that would be you Dances w pup. My Vet has already explained that there is nothing wrong with him eating cooked food once a day as long as he eats his dog food the rest of time. Thank you all who repsoned, telling me to mixed the foods.

What has happened here is that your puppy has learned that if he does not eat his dog food, he will get people food (which is usually much tastier) if he waits long enough. You need to break him of this bad habit, and quickly. Although you can create a diet for a dog based upon people food, in order to make it balanced and meet all his requirements, you must know a lot about nutrition, and be able to know exactly what types of food to feed and how often.
The best way to do this is to not feed your puppy people food for 48 hours. I know this may seem hard and cruel, but if you only supply him with puppy food, he will eat it - dogs are not programmed to starve to death when there is food available. He may whine and beg, but don't give in - otherwise you'll be training him on how he can get people food from you. I can almost guarantee that he will eat his puppy food when he gets hungry enough. Despite being "small" and "skinny", I assure you he will not starve to death nor become malnourished - a dog's instinct is survival, and survival requires eating.
Hope this helps!

Try to mix youe cooked food with the dog food. Each day add more of the dog food and less of your own homemade food. Do this for a continusly for a week, and your dog should change diets

No dog will starve himself to death. Offer him his kibble at dinner and breakfast time. Remove it if he doesn't eat it within half an hour. Later, try again. Once he gets hungry, he'll eat.A couple of things, though:1. You can mix the food you make with the kibble. We make some stew for our dog (from a vet-approved doggie cookbook) and put it on top of our dog's kibble in the evening (mostly kibble, with two spoonfuls of the stew on top).2. Use a good, premium dog food. Your dog will know the difference and be healthier. Try foods like Innova EVO, Wellness, Flint River Ranch, California Natural and other brands found at independent pet stores. With any kibble, read the ingredient list to make sure it doesn't contain animal byproducts or corn fillers.

Mix his dry puppy with alittle bit of the cooked stuff to tantalize him...do this for a few days then give him less & less of the cooked food and start mixing in a bit of his puppy wet food make sure he has some good chew treats like "greenies" or something to keep his teeth clean & healthy...he needs the vitamins in those puppyfoods to stay healthy...also stay away from store brands...the contain ash as a filler and can cause urinary blockage in pets..the exception being being Safeway Select products they are actually ok...I prefer IAMS brand pet foods. None of my pets would ever touch Science Diet foods...hope that helps...

if you continue to give him people food you'll never get him to eat his dog food. he knows that if he waits long enough you will give in. so stop feeding him your food. he will eventually give in and eat his own food.

We made the same mistake. What you have to do is gradually give him less amounts of table food over a few weeks. He may not eat his food, but that's alright. Empty his dish and fill it again for the next meal. Some kibbles are too hard to chew. Go to PETCO and try various brands, after you have weaned him down from table food.If he doesn't like it, you can always return it, and try something else. That's the stores policy. Good luck!

The problem is you got the dog used to eating cooked food. Sometimes we should always put in mind that a dog is not a human being that should be feed on what we eat. A dog is still an animal and should eat what he is supposed to eat. I suggest you stop feeding your dog with cooked food and give dog food instead. It will not eat for a couple of days, but trust me it will learn to eat it one day.
