How many times a day do you feed your dog?

Currently, my dogs is eating twice a day, morning and night. I recently read about some people only feeding their dogs once a day.

I know some larger dogs need to be fed twice a day. Some smaller dogs are able to only eat once.

Some Feeding Tips:
  • Feeding once-twice a day is good. As for the amount, monitor your dog's mass and activity and make adjustments to the amount and frequency of feeding. Obviously all dogs are different, because of size and breed. Much like humans, different dogs need a slightly different amount of food.
  • It is a good practice to feed your dog at the same time daily, so as to keep him/her on a predictable washroom schedule. Remember to clean your dog's dishes daily as well. Keep fresh, clean water in the bowl throughout the day and refill it before feeding time.
  • Some veterinarians and pet websites recommend starting off feeding your dog or puppy slightly LESS than what is recommended on the package. In a review of dog foods, it has been shown that most dogs are overfed based on the recommended package diet. (I'll track down this reference)
  • Feed your dog the same kind of food every day. If you plan on changing it, do it slowly over time to prevent upset stomach and diarrhea.
  • Gradually transition to new foods by mixing the old and new brands together, slowly replacing the old brand of food.

True! We use to feed our dogs once a day only. We only feed them in the morning, though they're not frail, thin or anything and they're use to it. Considering feeding them only once a day, they are big heavy dogs and they are German Shephards.

I think that it depends on the dog and their activities as well. Remember that a pregnant dog needs to eat more. If you are feeding them in a smaller bowl then consider twice a day morning and mid day.

My dog eats two times a day. One in the morning and one at dinner. He does not eat lunch, I have no clue why.

Chron,

You dog might be very good with what he is getting. There are ways that you can tell if you dog is not getting enough to eat. So you should be ok.

I have a Jack Russell dog who will be 12 years old in November. He lived with my ex-husband untill recently and was really over weight due to being fed his normal dog food at 5pm every day and also any left over human food ! Also he was not very active as my ex was unable for health reasons to take the dog for as many walks as he used too. Now I only feed him his dog food ( a half can of dog meat plus a handful of mixer biscuits) at 5pm. If I am eating fruit the dog loves to have some so he does get the odd grape or two but his favourite fruit are blueberries!! When we go to the pub occasionally he will share a bag of crisps with me. However he is getting more exercise now and has lost weight and is much livelier. In fact no one will believe he is so old, they think he is a puppy!

I feed my dog once a day. I fill the bowl up and he eats when he is hungry. There usually is food in it throughout the day so I don't think he is starving

Well with feeding I think it all depends on how much the dog weighs and how big it is. My mom has a wiener dog and also a basset hound. The basset hound gets fed twice a day while the the wiener dog only once. It's a good idea though if your feeding in mass amounts to give your dog a more healthier type of dog food.
