Although many people think of rats as pests or a menace, rats actually make wonderful pets. Rats are very intelligent, friendly animals that are easily tamed and often form bonds with their owners. There are those who claim that owning a pet rat often seems more like there is a very small dog in the house instead of a rodent!
Rats generally live for 2 or 3 years. They reach 9 to 11 inches long, with an additional 7 to 9 inches of tail. As they are social animals, they shouldn't be kept alone. Single sex pairs or groups are considered to be the ideal. When choosing a cage for your rats, make sure that, minimally, you are providing two square feet of space per rat.
Although rats aren't difficult to care for, they don't exactly qualify as a low-maintenance pet. Rats need plenty of attention and should be given at least an hour outside of their cage every day for exercise and play. Rats are very curious animals and love to explore.
When buying a pet rat, shop carefully. If you choose to make your purchase from a pet store, make sure that the rats are separated by gender after they are 6 to 8 weeks old. If you are interested in rats with particular coat colors, you will probably be best off finding a breeder. Rats from responsible breeders will be better socialized than pet store rats. Don't forget to check out your local animal shelter or rescue group to find rats that are in need of a new home.
