Do ferrets qualify as exotic pets?
Ferrets are almost always caged, caue less household damage than a dog or cat, but are still blacklisted as 'exotic'... why?
ferrets do not stink if properly taken care of, are not related to rats, and should not be in the walls!!!!

I have 9 ferrets and I wouldn't concider them as "exotic". Mine are not caged unless I am taking them somewhere. To me they act like puppies in a way.. they do make messes, but so do alot of animals including dogs (I have 4 dogs as well) Mine do have their own room with their toys, beds, ect but they pretty much have the run of the house. The most trouble they cause is playing in the toilets... otherwise they would rather have their own toys than destroy things.
In some states they are illegal though, as to why I have no idea.. but they arn't in Oregon. They can be purchased here just like a puppy or cat. Pet Co has many they get from one main breeder, they go for around $100 each.
They do not stink if you take care of them. They have a "slight" musk but you have to give them baths like what you would do with dogs. As to why the person below me thinking they roll in their own pee, maybe that's because no one cleaned up after them or kept a fresh litter box.
As for the person 'below' me: No need to get pissy and defensive then.

no, they qualify as incredibly stinky pets even after they have been descented.
My ex had one. It liked to roll around in its own pee. Maybe it's the behavior that's exotic.
As for the person above saying that we didn't clean the litter box-- normal people have jobs and must leave the house sometimes, usually for... like... 8 hours a day, maybe more! The litter box was changed mornings and evenings, thanks.

Maybe they are exotic because they need to poop every 2 hours and they are able to locate all corners in their environment. Their food is expensive $44 for 18 lbs. but they are able to cheer you up on your darkest day--"Hey...Where's the party?""Wait Wait gotta Poop!" We own 4 ferrets which is totally insane! Built them a whole shed!

In the pet trade they are listed as "exotic" pets! A ferret is a non - native to the US. Becareful if you live in California! They are illegal to own, buy or sell in California. You are looking at 5-10 years in jail per animal if you are caught. If you live in CA and want one move to a differnt state!

From my experience, they do have an odour, but it's not a offensive one.
They make good pets in general, but do need spacious living quarters.
