Actually, cows don't have 5 stomachs. Instead, they have one stomach with 4 chambers (people commonly confuse this fact and say that cows have 4 stomachs). In the first two chambers the food and saliva are separated into liquid and solid matter. The solid stuff clumps up, forming cud, which the cow regurgitates up and chews on to break down the fibers. This broken down fiber goes into the next stomach chamber, which then breaks down this stuff even more and the water is removed. Next, this digested matter is passed down into the next stomach chamber where it's digested further.

So that explains why cows still keeps on chewing even after a few minutes of eating, their stomach can let them chew again food that needs further digestion. I didn’t know this, all this time I thought they really do have 5 stomachs. Thanks for the info.

Wow five stomach seems to be so much. Well I think it really reflects on how big they are. Cows eat a lot of foods so they need a lot of storage.

Contrary to popular beliefs cows has only one stomach with 4 chambers on it.
The rumen holds up to 50 gallons of partially digested food. This is where cud comes from. Good bacteria in the rumen helps digest the cows food and provides protein for the cow.
The reticulum is called the hardware stomach because if cows accidentally eat hardware (like a piece of fencing scrap), it will often lodge here causing no further damage.
The omasum is sort of like a filter.
The abomasum which is like our stomach.

No!!!! Cows only have 1 stomach, but inside, 4 chambers. People often think that they have 4 seperate stomachs. That is incorrect. But I'm not at all sure where u got the figure 5 from!!? It's 4!
