i once took in a hurt bird with a broken wing and fed him etc and he coped fine, he lived with us until he was old enough and big enough to be on his own.
another time i took in a abandoned cat and looked after and i had until its tragic death which was when it was very old,it coped perfectly fine.

Once I came across a badly hurt dove, the poor thing was in real trouble,initially I never realized that it was turning blind also.I was out in a boat in a lake,the dove was struggling for its life,I somehow managed it on my boat.I later handed it over to the caretaker over there. The next day when I went again to the club, to my dismay I found out that the dove could not survive.
