Smile Eden Project: Animals in Nursing Facilities

Hi!

I am a recreation therapist who has worked at many different nursing facilities through out the years. Many nursing homes have atriums, some have pet dogs for the residents to enjoy and some even have bunny rabbits. These animals are a wonderful therapy for those who are depressed, lonely, and even for those with alzheimer's disease. I have always had a few of my resident help me care for the animals on the unit. This has enabled some of my clients to open up to their environment and has increased their quality of life. Just because someone goes to a nursing home does not mean they have to loose their opportunity to have a pet family.

I would like to remind those of you who might be looking into a retirement community or nursing facility either for yourself or your loved one that many facilities will allow a pet such as a bird in the room. Also, you are able to bring the family pet to visit the loved one... but not in the dining areas.

Have a wonderful day!
Vickie

My mother is in a nursing facility, and they have a beautiful atrium. One of the workers brings her little Yorkie in regularly, and they are have volunteers who bring dogs and cats, and there has even been a pony in to visit. The residents adore the animals!

Many people do agree animals help with elderly people. It provides comfort and companionship. I know I love having animals around. I think nursing homes should have many pets wandering around, of course, only if they are properly trained.

It is important to have some pets as part of therapy for some people. I know that is has helped the children in the hospitals to see animals.
