Post Tips for Wildlife Photos

  1. Use a zoom lens. Wildlife is unpredictable and dangerous; you do not want to get too close.
  2. Take photos quickly and often so as to not miss a great shot.
  3. Have patience. Sometimes it takes a long time to get a great shot.
  4. Use a fast shutter speed to capture or freeze movement (1/250 or greater).
  5. Avoid using flash. This may scare the animal and cause it to react unpredictably. You will also lose your chance to take another photo. Make sure there is ample light to take a good shot. If using film, select a higher ISO (400 or greater) if it is overcast.
  6. Do not feed or tempt the animals in order to get them closer. This is dangerous!
  7. To avoid scaring animals away, do not wear strong perfume, cologne or soap. Animals can smell you from far away and will avoid you.
  8. Try to get the animal's eyes in the shot. This greatly enhances any photo and allows the animal's individual personality to show through.
  9. Anticipate the animal's movement. This is essential for capturing those split-second moments.
  10. Try different angles. Don't be afraid to go higher or lower to catch a great shot. Remember to remain safe and stay out of the animal's exit path should you scare it.

Have fun!
