Tips for Holiday Pet Photos
- Avoid using flash. Make sure there is ample light to take a good shot. If using film, select a higher ISO (400 or greater) if it is overcast.
- Use a fast shutter speed to capture or freeze movement (1/250 or greater).
- To keep your pet from running away, have a toy or snack close by to keep them interested and occupied between shots.
- Take them out to the washroom or for a walk beforehand to keep them from becoming hyperactive or restless. A tired or sleepy pet is always easy to pose.
- If dressing your pet, go for snug fitting clothes and hats with elastics to prevent them from tearing them off. Make sure they are comfortable.
- Try to get the pet's eyes in the shot. This greatly enhances any photo and allows the pet's individual personality to show through. Try not to use flash while catching their eyes straight on, this causes the animal equivalent of 'red-eye' -- cats have that erie yellow glow in their eyes. Shooting at an angle will prevent this.
- Use different backgrounds. Fireplaces create a warm, winter atmosphere. If taking shots outside in the snow, have a pad or blanket underneath your pet to keep them warm.
- A sleeping pet is always cute. Throw a hat on and snap a few photos while they sleep. Quick and easy for the pet that won't sit still.
- Try different angles. Use close-up and far-away shots.
- Reward them! Give them a treat.
