Default My adopted cat has ear problems that vet

says in an allergic reaction. What else could it be? My poor cat that I adopted from the uni patently put up with guinea pig treatment there and now is having painful ear problems. I am a pensioner and can't afford to keep taking him to the vet each time I want to try a different approach. It was advise to put him on a diet of chicken only which I have done for months. He does not have earmites or infection. I can't sdtand to see him suffer and am thinking of putting him down if I can't help him which is ver sad because I rescued him from death only months ago. If anyone has any ideas I would greatly appreciate it. His ears seem warm, red, but he mainly scratches area on head at front base of ears. He shakes his head a lot and often gives painful meows, especially when he wakes up.i did also try expensive shicken based product but can't afford to keep buying that either. Is it something other than an allergy?

Hopefully you have gotten a second opinion. Vets are like doctors, some are good some are not.

There are treatments for allergies as well. Usually a Depo shot or some type of cortizone.

You could also try rubbing a little of normal cortizone cream on the spot he itches.

If it is allergies then the pain and shaking of the head are probably congestion pushing on his inner ear. I would think the vet could prescribe some sort of antihistamine or cortizone to relieve the allergy.

If the food change has not helped there is no reason to continue it, if it is a financial burden.

I would trust your doctor. I dont really know much about animals but I think they are same as humans, if your cat was a child I would put warm oil on her ears to relieve the pain. But then its just my opinion I don't know for sure if it works.

my cat has ear problems and like you we had trouble figuring out what was wrong, but eventially we found out he had a polyp in his ear. Its a growth that makes the cat itch, shake his head and sometimes there is a 'discharge' from his ears. We had it removed and he has never been better. But some other options are that he has a rotten tooth, as this sometimes causes the pus to leak into the ear cavity. its really simple to fix!

Your cat could have mites or a yeast infection. Is there any black in the ears? I clean my cats ears then check them one week later, if there is dirt in the ear is is the sign of mites or infection. Change vets, not all are good.
